Top romantic getaways this Christmas: From winter wonderlands to fairy-tale fantasies
With the holidays fast approaching and as the first frosts creep in, now’s the time to look forward to getting away and escaping together on the romantic winter break you’ve dreamt of.
There’s nothing more romantic than swooping your loved one off their feet and whisking them away somewhere special. Even if you can’t get all the way up to the North Pole there’s plenty of fantastic ideas for couples’ breaks this Christmas. Listed below are six of the www.my-weddinginsurance.co.uk team’s favourites, including one or two you might never have heard of!
Talinn is one of the essential romantic cities, though probably one of the least well known. Timeless cobbled streets wind and weave themselves around courtyards and chestnut-lined parks, while cafés light up the evening with candles and music. Talinn’s baroque architecture, romantic ruins and street towers give every new perspective an impressive elegance. There’s an ice-rink in winter – and not to mention a great chance of snow – and for those of us with two left feet there’s still the Kissing Hill, the scenic viewing platforms on Toompea Hill, and the Kadriorg Park to provide a sense of winter romance for the ideal break.
It’s already a fabulously romantic city with its canals and intimate side-streets but Amsterdam is even more spectacular in the wintery months. There’s Christmas market stalls, and cafés and restaurants beckon warmth in the chilly evenings. Being so close to home it’d be criminal to not take the short ride over, cruise on a canal boat, amble through the Vondelpark and enjoy a few days getting lost in the unassuming charms of the city.
Even if you’re not as enthusiastic about plunging into an ice pool as we are, renting out a cottage for two in this remote Finnish village offers a romantic getaway in the snow with the warmth of a private sauna when the cold gets too much, and there’s even the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. We doubt there’s much that would top that for romance this Christmas, unless you happen to spot another trail of twinkling lights crossing the night sky.
San Sebastian, Spain
Imagine the most picturesque beach-side location, with magnificent ornamental façades looming over the breaking surf and the neighbouring Pyrenees off on the distant horizon. Picture illuminated city streets winding between tall buildings adorned with the proud traces of Basque culture. Pintxo bars offer all kinds of exotic delicacies and each café, bar and club promises excitement. Add in a splash of winter charm and plenty of festive entertainment options and you’ll have San Sebastian.
Nothing comes close to Salzburg for the spot of the ultimate chocolate-box Christmas town. Nestled in the snowy Alpine mountains, the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and simply stuns with a cityscape of church spires, Gothic and Baroque flourishes, capped off by the dominating Hohensalzburg Fortress dating back to 1077. The nearby mountains are perfect for couples looking to get out for a bit of an adrenaline rush during the day, before coming back to the innumerable romantic opportunities the city holds in the evening.
Bonus pick: Paris, France
We couldn’t write a list like this and not include Paris. It’s the quintessential city of romance, the standard by which all others get measured. And it deserves its reputation – it’s beautiful in winter, and being so close to home, Paris provides the ultimate romantic getaway. C’est magnifique.
