Couple celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary
Len, 93 and Irene Brown, 91, have recently celebrated their remarkable platinum (70th) wedding anniversary. The couple from Bristol met in their early teens and have been inseparable since, getting married in their local St Mary Redcliffe Church on September 6th, 1941.
The couple have revealed one of their best kept secrets to a long happy marriage – cabbage water. The beverage is made from water left over from boiling the green veg, and Len and Irene have enjoyed cabbage water every Sunday with their roast dinner. They both claim that the purifying water has added years onto their lives.
The drink is known for its health benefits, becoming popular in the Eighties with celebrities such as Liz Hurley and Joanna Lumley including it in their diet.
Len said: ‘My mum always said it purifies the blood. I told the doctor the other day and he said that may well be right.’
The happy couple met through one of Len’s sisters (Len being one of 11 children), and Len was then granted leave from his electrician post near John O’Groats in Scotland to tie the knot with Irene.
Irene said: ‘I remember being very excited about the wedding. On the day there was a lot of fuss, it all went very quickly.’
Len and Irene celebrated their platinum anniversary with their family and friends at the Royal British Legion.
