Couple celebrate their 70th – Platinum – wedding anniversary
John and Lilly Hall are celebrating their Platinum Wedding anniversary after 70 years of blissful marriage. The couple wed in October 1941, after John was granted 7 days leave from his post with the Royal Engineers.
Seven decades on, the happy couple have two children, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The whole family are celebrating by going on a family holiday this month.
The couple met when they were aged 11 and 12, and 91-year-old Lilly said: ‘We were 18 when we got together then two years later we were engaged and a year after that we were married. We are very thankful to have each other. We have a lovely supportive family, two lovely daughters and grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are a joy.’
John, 92, said: ‘I thought Lilly was beautiful so I asked her to marry me. I’d always known she was the woman I would marry. During the war I wasn’t home for Christmas for seven years so that was tough.’
He also added: ‘We’ve had our ups and down but there have been more ups than downs. We get on very well. You have got to have a lot of patience and stamina and you have to be strong.’
Mr & Mrs Hall live in Chester-le-Street in County Durham. They were able to have a short honeymoon in Edinburgh before John had to return to duty. The couple have been lifelong members of Pelton Holy Trinity Church where John was also a lay reader for 55 years and sang in the choir. He received a Civic Award from Chester-le-Street District council for his services to the community.
The anniversary was celebrated on the 4th October surrounded by all their family, and they even received a card from the Queen congratulating them on their long marriage.
