Bride who fractured her spine on her honeymoon is to return home
A woman who fractured her spine when she fell from the balcony of her hotel room is to return home after a successful public appeal to raise £16,000.
Carrie and Michael Dudbridge were coming to the end of their honeymoon on the Greek island of Corfu when the accident happened. The couple were married on 31st July and the holiday had been a surprise gift from their wedding guests.
But the dream honeymoon turned into a nightmare when Carrie lost her footing and plunged 30ft from their hotel balcony, fracturing her spine in three places.
Although she survived the fall Carrie’s long term prognosis is unclear and Michael is keen to fly his wife back to the UK to continue her treatment.
Unfortunately the couple had not taken out travel insurance as they mistakenly believed that their European Health Insurance Cards would cover the expenses if they had an accident.
While the cards covered them for local treatment costs they were not covered for medical transport home, leaving Michael facing a £16,000 bill.
With only 50 euros remaining Michael started an internet campaign to raise the money and thanks to the generosity of strangers he has now raised enough money for the flight.
One generous donation came from an anonymous woman who lives on the island. She had seen the campaign on the internet and offered Michael all the money he needed.
Michael is now waiting for doctors to declare Carrie fit to fly before returning home.
Speaking to the BBC Michael describes the encounter with the generous stranger:
”She said ‘I have seen you on the internet and I’d like to pay for you to go home’.
“I said ‘What all of the money to go home?’ and she went ‘Yes, I’ll pay that now, I’ll transfer the money to you right now’.
“I cried with happiness. I can’t explain it. It means so much, so, so much.”
