‘Blind Date’ couple celebrate their 20th anniversary
Alex and Sue Tatham, now of South London, first met on the 1980s show Blind Date, hosted by Cilla Black which was very popular on Saturday evenings in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. In total there were 356 episodes of the show, running from 1985 all the way to 2003.
Now, the happy couple are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary after tying the knot in a traditional church ceremony in 1991, with Cilla Black as one of the guests. The wedding was filmed and shown as a Blind Date Special, being watched by 17 million viewers.
Alex was brought up in an affluent area of London, and Sue was brought up in the Pelsall area of Walsall. The pair were encouraged by workmates to go on the popular dating show in 1998, and now have a daughter, Emily, 17, son Charlie, 15, and a ten-year-old spaniel called Jasper.
Alex said: ‘Quite frankly, I’m absolutely amazed that two people could meet each other in the way that we did. And here we are, about to celebrate 20 years of marriage. It’s all rather moving. I have to say it really is an extraordinary fairytale.’
The couple still bump into Cilla Black often, at various functions for Alex’s work. ‘I see her almost every year,’ said Alex. ‘We are also sponsors of the Henley Music Festival and Cilla has been there for each of the past three years. We always make a point of saying hello and we’re always very happy to see each other.’
